Visiting America? You’ll Want to Bring Visitors Health Insurance

December 9, 2009 Posted by Larry Welks

Whether you’re traveling to the United States in fulfillment of a lifelong dream or a regular traveler across the “pond,” you’ll want to be sure you’re protected by visitors health insurance. The US healthcare system is very complicated, very expensive and does not include universal coverage, particularly for foreigners. Buying visitors health insurance is inexpensive, gives you peace of mind and can keep you from significant financial hardship if anything does happen while you’re in America for your visit.

Below are five tips for getting quality coverage at a great price.

1.    Major health insurers in the US offer visitors health insurance. You’ll want to choose one of these companies and not an unknown. You can do simple Internet searches to learn about the better-known insurers here to help with the decision. The Internet is also a great place to comparison shop and buy the insurance you need.
2.    Check on how long the visitors health insurance plan is valid. If you’re a visiting student or a a worker here on an H1B visa, you’ll need a plan for much longer than someone just in the States on vacation. These plans differ greatly in both coverage levels and cost so pay close attention.
3.    Be sure all claims are processed through the US. It is important this is the case because of the complexity of our system. Costly mistakes can arise if the processors do not understand American health insurance.
4.    Don’t assume a short trip doesn’t require visitors health insurance. Accidents can happen at any time and if you don’t have insurance, care may be delayed or inadequate. It’s not a risk worth taking.
5.    Make sure the plan you choose covers everything from doctor’s office visits and prescriptions to major surgery and hospital stays. If it doesn’t, move on.

International travel can be very exciting and very stressful for even the most seasoned travelers. The list of things you need to do before you leave on any trip can seem endless and you may be tempted to eliminate a few things or cut some corners if budgets get tight. But, the one thing you must be sure to check off that list is visitors health insurance. Without it, you’re in a foreign country with no medical safety net and even a small injury or illness can leave you lost in a system you don’t understand and may not be able to navigate.
