how can I get health insurance to travel to Europe?

June 8, 2010 Posted by admin

I’m a resident in the USA and I want to travel to Europe, to apply for the visa i need to have medical health/travel insurance and i have to summit an official letter stating that the insurance will be valid for Europe, it has coverage of at least $40.000 and it has coverage for emergencies. I just called my health insurance company and they dont provide any of the things i need. Where can i get one that does? (I dont have so much time before the trip)

Any travel agency will be happy to sell you a travel insurance, those have the things you need.
Some insurance companies will sell travel insurances too, as well as the airports.

It just takes a few minutes and some money.

Added:
If you need to apply for a Schengen visa a health insurances is compulsary. Asker mentions being a resident of the USA, not a citizen.

Travel insurance for you to visit Europe is NOT compulsory. You can stand the risk yourself if you wish, however it would be foolish not to have some basic cover, if only to fly your corpse home if the worst was to happen.

Check your local phone book, newspapers or search on-line and you will find dozens of companies offering suitable cover. You pays your money and you takes your pick.

    Enjoy your trip.

    Hi andrea1991,

please follow "Willekes" advise and disregard the answer of "Ian M". He [being a Brit retired in Cyprus] has proven several times that he does not have a clue of Continental European visa requirements. As a U.S. resident [Green Card holder, visa applicant, not U.S. citizen who does not need a visa] you need to hold proof of a sick/travel insurance which covers all the Schengen states. Check the "small written" terms and conditions of your credit card. Most of them cover foreign sick/travel insurance. If yours does not I advice to obtain a short term insurance here:

Be sure that I am not an agent who tries to make profit be promoting his business here, I just try to provide advice. Any other insurance company can cover your stay in the Schengen territory..

There are plenty of companies in the US that sell travel insurance, just check the Yellow Pages or do an online search.

If you hold a US passport you do not need to apply for a visa to visit Europe. US citizens can stay in the Schengen Zone for 90 days out of every 180 days without a visa.

Andrea – Travel insurance is something of a specialty product and, therefore, not generally sold by most of the "standard" health insurance companies (i.e., Blue Cross, Aetna, United H’care, etc.). This makes it a little hard to find sometimes. While it’s possible that a travel agent might have access to a product, I’d suggest you take a bit more care and contact a health insurance "specialist" – that is, a broker who specializes in health insurance primarily. He’ll probably suggest one of several specific insurance plans offered by Assurant, HCC Medical, Int’l Medical Group, etc.

    Here’s a what to do:
    1. To find a local broker in your area to contact, go to the NAHU website (National Association of Health Underwriters, which is the professional association for brokers – like me – who specialize in health insurance products).
    2. If you prefer, you may search for "travel health insurance" and see what comes up.
    3. Feel free to visit my website (see below) where you can request a no obligation quote.

To sum up, don’t simply buy the first thing you see; contact a professional & do a bit of research first.

    Have a swell trip!

You go to PT school for PT. When you graduate, you will know the basics. You can also do a clinical at a place that offers it. The salary is the same as a PT
