Car Rental in San Francisco?

November 9, 2010 Posted by Larry Welks

I am flying to the airport from Vancouver to San Francisco. I need to get a car rental in San Francisco for about a week so I can travel further south in California.

Can anyone recommend personally to me a good place to rent cars in San Francisco, somewhere super close to the airport? Something cheap with a good rate and plan, I’m a bit nervous as it’s my first time renting a car. It’ll be in July. I’d prefer someone who has had a good experience with a certain company.

Thank you!

If your flying into San Franciso airport..they have every single rental car service available.. Budget and Enterprise are the best.

Rental car for Seattle?

October 22, 2010 Posted by Larry Welks

I will be visiting Seattle this weekend. I’m arriving Saturday morning and will be in town until Monday morning/afternoon. I plan to drive up to Vancouver after I check out of the hotel on Monday. Other than my trip to Vancouver, will I need a rental car for the weekend in Seattle? I’m staying at Hotel Monaco in Downtown.

If a car is not needed, what is the best way for me to get from the airport into Downtown?

You could certainly do without one, and I suspect parking at the Monaco, well located in the center of downtown, is expensive. Between things within walking distance like Pike Place Market or Pioneer Square, a great ferry ride to Bainbridge or Bremerton as a foot passenger to enjoy the skyline, and Seattle Center which you can reach by Monorail, there is more than enough to keep you busy without a car for a couple of days. On weekdays the buses in the central part of Seattle are free, and traffic can be confusing, so avoiding driving has lots of benefits. Recommendation, begin your car rental on Monday for use driving to Canada.

Shuttle Express offers frequent service to downtown hotels, and there is an airporter bus to the bigger hotels downtown. If you are on a budget and do not have too much luggage, Sound Transit has a bus direct from the Airport (Bay 2 just south of the terminal, under cover about 200 feet from the door) to downtown. All of those options are easier than renting a car and finding your way downtown were traffic patterns are confusing even for natives.

how do i drive an american rental car to canada, if i am canadian?

September 29, 2010 Posted by Larry Welks

I’m a Canadian Citizen living in Montreal and am currently on a business trip to Seattle. I decided that i would be a good idea to go visit my friends in Vancouver. Now here is my question: can i drive my the car rented in Seattle to Vancouver. Obviously my rental car has a USA licence plate.
official goverment answer:

We regret to inform you that only U.S. residents are permitted to drive a U.S.-registered vehicle in Canada. Canadian residents cannot bring a U.S. rental vehicle into Canada. Under the Temporary Importation of Conveyances by Residents of Canada Regulations (see Customs Memorandum D2-4-1 at http://www.cbsa.gc.ca/E/pub/cm/d2-4-1/README.html), a conveyance may be imported temporarily by a resident in the following cases:

- For personal transportation only from the point of arrival to a specified destination in Canada when the purpose of importation is to transport personally owned goods into or out of Canada. Return must be within 30 days.

- When authorized by a customs inspector in instances where a resident is required, due to unforeseen circumstances or emergency reasons, to utilize a conveyance on which duties have not been paid for personal transportation to reach a specified destination in Canada and return.
Under no circumstances are conveyances admissible under these regulations for touring purposes or for leisure activities in Canada, nor is any local use permitted (e.g. point-to-point movement in Canada). In addition, the Motor Vehicle Safety Act does not exempt the temporary importation of vehicles by residents from the requirement to register the vehicle in the Registrar of Imported Vehicles (RIV) Program and meet all other requirements of the RIV Program. As such, the rental vehicle can only be imported if the vehicle enters the RIV Program and pays all appropriate fees and taxes.

Thank you for contacting the Canada Border Services Agency.

Usually when you rent a car in US they ask whether you are driving out of state. There is no issue normally with renting in US and driving to any other state or Canada BUT you do need to tell them. A phone call to their offices should suffice – get the name of the person you speak with and preferably a ref number-

EDIT.. i checked – wow you are correct, as a Canadian you cant rent a vehicle in US and drive to Canada, in fact if the vehicle has US plates on its a no go. I am surprised.

What is the best way to get around Seattle/Vancouver area.?

September 11, 2010 Posted by Larry Welks

I will be spending 5 days in Washington/BC flying into Bellingham, and wanting to spend a couple days in both Vancouver and Seattle.

Should I rent a car in Vancouver or can I see most of the city by public transportation? Same with Seattle?

What about getting across the border with a US rental car? Would I be better off parking in the US and going across the border using public transportation? If I do take a rental car over the border what liscencing and permits do I need?

I did Vancouver/Seattle/Victoria without a car with no problem… but if you want to get out into the mountains or the San Juan Islands for a day or so, it may help there.

I’ve taken rental cars across the border many times in the east with no problem. as long as you’re not carrying fruit, drugs, weapons, fireworks, etc., you should be okay (but the lines on I-5 could be long).

My favorite way to get around was boat. From Victoria, one can get ot Seattle, Vancouver and the San Juan Islands.

there are buses and at least one train between Vancouver and Seattle. Both cities are well-served by public transit (and downtown Victoria’s small enough you don’t need it).

What are all the non acceptable things in the Vancouver car rental regarding the license?

June 8, 2010 Posted by Larry Welks

My son had planned to travel to Vancouver this spring and he likes to rent a car there can any one assist me on knowing what are the non acceptable things while getting a car for rent.

Learner’s permit, mutilated or altered license motorcycle license is not acceptable and International driver’s permit is not acceptable on its own it should be accompanied by a valid license from the country of residence and the renter’s driver’s license must be valid for the entire rental period.

How can i save money on the car rental insurance in Vancouver?

May 19, 2010 Posted by Larry Welks

I don’t have my own car and iv e planned to rent a car for more than three to four months and buying the insurance form the Vancouver car rental company is too high and how could i solve this problem

The car rental companies offers different offer for the customers and a rental car for that amount of time is also could expensive and you can buy liability insurance policy from several companies who sells them. But this only makes you "legal" to drive, it will not cover the vehicle you are renting.
