Will my american driver’s license be accepted to rent a car or do I have to obtain some other license to drive a rental car in a foreign country like Canada? Vancouver to be exact.

A valid US driver’s licence is all you need – that, plus a credit card. Road speeds are given in kph – kilometers per hour – so you will have to be aware of the difference and watch the speedometer. Because most cars in Canada were made in the US, they have both miles and kilometers on the speedometer. 60mph is the same as 100 kph. And gas is more expensive in Canada, although it seems to keep creeping up on both sides of the border, doesn’t it?

Enjoy your visit to Vancouver.

Probably the easiest place to rent a car in Vancouver is at the airport, you can do this over the Internet through hotwire, expedia, travelocity and others. Hotwire often gives you the best rate. You may also order a car through Costco if you’re a member.

Please don’t pay any heed to Stop Racism’s comments, he’s a very deluded person who seems to hate everything about Canada and should probably seek medical attention sooner rather than later.

Enjoy Vancouver, it is as beautiful city, one of the safest in Canada.

Yes, you can rent a car in Vancouver using your home driver’s licence. You do not need another licence, assuming that you have a valid state licence in English and with a photo. This is true in all of Canada.

Canadian citizens can rent cars al through the US using their Canadian passports too.

Your US driver’s license is quite acceptable in Canada, you don’t need any other kind of special license. The only thing you will find different is that we measure distance in kilometres (a km is 5/8 of a mile) and speed in kilometres per hour. All cars have both sets of numbers, kph and mph on the speedometer.

No you do not need a special license to drive. You are not a citizen of Canada, you are a citizen of the U.S. The only valid license that are required are the ones from the U.S. Your U.S. license are valid in Canada.

As long as it’s valid in your home sate at the time you rent you’re good to go. Of course, just like if it were Canadian license, it can’t be a learners, suspended etc. and any restrictions of course you’d still have to abide by any restrictions your issuing department has placed on your license.
