November 28, 2009 Posted by Larry Welks

There are many snowboarding trips one can take in North America and some that one can take in Europe. The North American snowboarding trips take you to Banff/Lake Louis/Sunshine Village, Whistler/Blackcomb, and Mont Tremblant. For The Banff/Lake Louise/Sunshine Village snowboarding trip one can use the lift pass that is good for all three resorts that cost just $414.

Situated picturesquely in the very heart of the Canadian Rocky Mountains, these three snowboarding resorts promise some awesome skiing as well as snowboarding where there is a lot of spellbinding scenery and also slopes that simply take the breath away. Among the protected wilderness of Banff National Park, Banff/Lake Louis provides three skiing areas as well as two towns.

Go Nanaimo, British Columbia

November 28, 2009 Posted by Larry Welks

Boomtown Nanaimo, British Columbia, is currently one of the hottest housing markets in Canada. Baby boomers all across the country are casting their aging eyes west in their quest for a retirement haven, and the many advantages of Nanaimo, BC, are becoming known.

First off, there’s the mild climate moderated by warm Pacific currents arriving from Japan. Nanaimo only gets a couple of weeks of snow a year, quite a contrast to central and eastern Canada which can be snowed in from December to April. There’s enough rain to keep the city’s gardens and parks lush and green, but plenty of clear, dry days for outdoor enthusiasts throughout the year.

Nanaimo isn’t a big city – under 100,000 – so traffic jams are the exception, and there’s still free parking downtown. As the main service center for the upper two-thirds of Vancouver Island, the City of Nanaimo has all the services you could ask for, from the big box stores of North Nanaimo to intimate boutiques and cafes downtown.

Nanaimo is well connected. BC Ferries runs large car ferries from Nanaimo to Vancouver every couple of hours, and seaplanes are constantly coming and going on their way to/from downtown Vancouver or Vancouver International Airport. Nanaimo also has a regular airport south of town and you can get a free extension to Nanaimo on many Air Canada tickets to Vancouver.

Another great attraction for snowbird retirees is the fact that Nanaimo real estate is still affordable. Housing prices have increased 50 percent in recent years, but you can still purchase real estate here for about half which comparable properties would cost in Vancouver. Nanaimo Realty, Remax Nanaimo, and Coast Realty Nanaimo can tell you more.

However Nanaimo’s greatest attraction is its friendly, outgoing people. Nanaimo still has a certain “small town” air lost in go-go places like Toronto, and it’s easy for newcomers to plug into the local scene. There’s always something happening in the Harbour City. It’s paradise found.

Understanding Health Insurance – Part 2

November 28, 2009 Posted by Larry Welks

Medical specialists can be a godsend, especially in particular medical emergencies. Imagine knowing that a specialist could provide exceptional care for your particular medical condition. Now imagine that your insurance carrier does not allow you to see any specialists outside of their approved list. Would you be upset? I certainly would be. This very same situation happens to people everyday who tried to cut corners on their insurance premiums in order to save a measly 10-15%. When they finally need to file for a major health condition, they are stuck visiting doctors who must be on the carriers “approved” list.

If your current health insurance provider severely limits your decision-making ability when it comes to seeing a specialist or even family doctors you might prefer over others, you should purchase an additional Major Medical policy that allows you the freedom to go wherever you wish. If you ever encounter the above described scenario and you are not happy with the “approved” doctors you are referred to, simply go see the doctor of your choice since you are covered under the additional policy. To offset the cost of purchasing an additional policy for this unique situation, you can choose a much higher deductible on the second policy.

Do you travel a lot? Do you live in different states or perhaps different countries at different times of the year? If so, you should make sure your insurance policy covers you wherever you are. If your policy does not cover you for worldwide, non-emergency medical attention, you can purchase an additional policy that will. If it is expensive, choose a higher deductible. And should you decide to purchase an additional policy for travel or international living, purchase your policy limits accordingly to the amount of time you intend to stay at each location.

The last thing to consider when choosing a health insurance policy is whether or not the insurance provider has paperless claim submission. Although a minor detail, paperless claims can provide you with significant convenience after you experience extensive medical attention. Consider it the icing on the cake for a good insurance policy. After all, who wants to spend hours and hours filling out paperwork to file a claim? If you’ve just experienced major medical attention such as a surgical procedure, filing out paperwork is the last thing you want to worry about.

If you are married and you provide health insurance for the both of you through your employer, there’s no need to purchase additional health insurance for your spouse unless its coverage falls outside of your current policy limits. “Double coverage” is a waste of money since you cannot collect twice on the same claim. This recommendation does not apply to a Major Medical policy if purchased to extend coverage or allow for greater flexibility as mentioned elsewhere in this article.

Choosing insurance coverage for your children should be based on the criteria mentioned earlier in this article and not by cost of coverage. When it comes to your children, don’t cut corners on health insurance unless you simply cannot afford it. If both parents can provide it through their respective employer, choose the insurance policy that allows for the most flexibility on the areas listed above, and then use cost as a final determining factor if you need to.

Health insurance typically comes in two forms: individual or family, and family could be a single parent with one child or a married couple with ten children. The insurance companies do not further define the definition of family other than a minimum of two individuals. As a single parent or a small family, this means you are paying premiums equal to a large family. The simple solution for a single parent is to take the policy provided by their employer but for a single individual. Since your employer is paying part of the cost, this should be on the “less expensive” side of health insurance coverage. When it comes to your children’s health insurance, purchase an individual policy for each child. Again, don’t cut corners when it comes to your children’s health insurance. Choose a policy that affords the greatest flexibility in the areas mentioned throughout this article while still being affordable cost-wise.

Whistler-blackcomb staff housing – which is the best place?

November 28, 2009 Posted by Larry Welks

I in a desperate hurry to sort out accomodation for 08/09 season. i will hopefully be working at whistler blackcomb so the staff housing looks like the best option (if i get it) but which place is the better place, there are five different "glacier" and all the others …which is the best place to stay?

When most people talk about "staff accommodation" in Whistler they’re usually referring to a building up by the Fairmont hotel which is mostly used to house Fairmont staff but there are plenty of staff there from Whistler-Blackcomb and other employers in the area as well. I’ve never actually been in there myself, but a friend of mine lived there briefly when he first moved to Whistler and, believe me, he got the heck out of there as fast a he could. It’s very much like a college dorm – crowded, noisy, not a lot of privacy and, sadly, the residents don’t appear to take very good care of the grounds. If none of that matters to you then by all means try it out as it’s probably one of the cheapest options around. I do know that Whistler-Blackcomb has been securing leases on a few private homes around town for the 08/09 season in order to ensure that they have a good supply of housing for their staff, so you would probably be wise to speak to WB once you’re hired and tell them you need assistance in finding a place to stay. They’ll be happy to help you out.

What are some good options for travel health insurance?

November 28, 2009 Posted by Larry Welks

My husband and I are traveling to East Africa from the USA for 9 months and need to find medical insurance that will cover us abroad. What are some good, fairly inexpensive options? Are there any insurance options specifically for international volunteers? Our budget is about $250/month for both of us. Thanks

health-quotes.isgreat.org – here is my health insurance plan. As I remember they can provide such a service.

what is the FHORD (Fairmont Hotel Overseas Recruitment Department, whether it’s genuine or not ?

Beware – this sounds like an identity theft scam. The real Fairmont has a warning about this sort of thing on their Careers home page that says:

"FRAUD WARNING
Please note a recent scam involves soliciting individuals for international employment via e-mail using various internet based e-mail accounts that use the Fairmont name. Individuals are then asked to provide copies of their personal identification and to send money in order to process the application.

Fairmont Hotels & Resorts has not authorized this form of communication and no such recruitment program is being offered or sanctioned by our company. These offers are fraudulent. Fairmont Hotels & Resorts has notified the authorities to investigate.

If you receive an offer of employment but are unsure if it is legitimate, please contact pathfinder@fairmont.com.

If you have been a victim of this scheme, please contact your local police department to report the matter."

I hope this helps you!
